To some, breweries and distilleries on Colorado’s Western Slope instill excitement and curiosity as each place offers its own masterful style. While there are over 300 craft breweries and nearly 100 distilleries in Colorado, the Montrose to Silverton area offers some notable masters you won’t want to miss.
First on the list is Storm King Distilling Company, a newer distillery to Montrose. A family-run operation, Storm King uses local ingredients to create their award-winning spirits. Known for their gin, rum, vodka, and whiskey, they offer tours and guided tastings of their craft. While they don’t serve food, there is a food truck by the covered patio seating to make the experience complete. Whether you indulge in the 2-year aged rye whiskey, prize-winning rested gin, or the masterfully created smooth vodka, you won’t be disappointed.
A well-known brewery specialist is Colorado Boy with three locations in Montrose, Ridgway, and Ouray. Each location offers a full restaurant experience with a variety of specialty artisan pizzas, wings, and salads to pair with one of their ales. An environmentally conscious company, Colorado Boy uses wind power for electricity and solar power for hot water in their Ridgway location. Their specialty beers come in growlers and cans convenient for to-go orders, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample their lagers, ales, and IPAs wherever you please.
Whether you are taking a break from winter skiing or are off-roading in the summer, Silverton’s Golden Block Brewery offers several craft beers that will stimulate your palette. They have a variety of choices from an Irish red ale, Scottish malty ale, a full-bodied IPA, or their newest signature beer that is sure to please. Combined with their top-notch menu of pizzas, paninis, and salads, you will have a mouth-watering experience at 9,318’ elevation.
And last, but not least is the Telluride Distilling Company, which was the first legal distillery in the town. Their complex distilling process produces a tantalizing whiskey, gluten free vodka and schnapps, and 90-proof cocktail bitters. With the use of Telluride’s mountain water for proofing and dilution, the distillery offers some of the finest hand-labeled bottles in Colorado.
Whether you just like to occasionally indulge in adult beverages, or you are an avid liquor collector, the Western Slope’s choices of spirits and beer are sure to please. If you really want to make it an experience to remember, there are trail maps of some 60 distilleries in Colorado to tour that you can plan your summer vacation around. Whatever your alcohol preference, drink responsibly and enjoy!
