Ready to climb a 14er? If you’re new to living in Colorado and enjoying the hiking and other outdoor recreation that’s offered there, you might not be sure what that involves. But for people who are used to hiking mountains in Colorado, a 14er is one of the 58 mountain peaks that exceed 14,000 feet in height.
There are more of these 14ers in Colorado than in any other state, but that doesn’t mean they are all hard to climb. Some of them are, but others are much easier despite their size. Here are four of the most popular 14ers for climbers.
1) Pikes Peak – 14,115 feet
Inspiration for the “America the Beautiful” poem, this peak offers breathtaking views during the day and amazing stargazing at night.
2) Mt. Lincoln – 14,293 feet
This peak might not have inspired a song, but that doesn’t make the views from the top less amazing. You can see for miles, and the view is worth the trip to the top.
3) Challenger Point – 14,081 feet
It can take effort to get up to the top of this one, but the beauty is there. Just make sure you’re careful of the affects altitude sickness might have if you’re unprepared. Drink plenty of water to avoid an altitude headache.
4) Kit Carson Peak – 14,165 feet
Named after the man and legend himself, the stargazing opportunities at night and long-range views during the day make this a popular climb.
If you’re truly an outdoor enthusiast you may be looking at everything from the Front Range to the Western Slope, so you can find new challenges to enjoy. When you live in Colorado, outdoor activity is just part of the adventure. The real estate you buy there can be beautiful, but so can all the great locations you can’t own but you can visit and appreciate.
Thinking you might want to buy a home in Colorado? You’re not alone. While plenty of people visit the state every year, a lot of the people who climb those 14ers are residents, not tourists. They see the value in living in such a great location, and you will, too.
