Colorado has so much to consider when it comes to outdoor recreation options. If you like treasure hunting or historical information, one of the options you might want to consider is the exploration of one of its 1,500 ghost towns. There are locations all around the state, from the Western Slope to the Front Range. If you like a good ghost town or you want to see what life was like in a mining town, consider these popular pieces of real estate.

1) Carson

With historic buildings and a setting full of natural beauty, this is one of the best outdoor activity choices when you’re looking for an old mining town. Silver was mined here, and the buildings that remain standing help tell the tale. While Carson isn’t far from Lake City and most of the roads are easily traveled, you’ll need a four-wheel-drive vehicle to get all the way to the site.

2) Dearfield

As the first African-American settlement, this ghost town has plenty to see along with a lot of historical value. It’s about 25 miles east of Greeley and still has the diner, founder’s home, and gas station. There are currently attempts being made to ensure that the site is preserved for others to see in the future. Living in Colorado can mean learning about its history, and this is a great way to do that.

3) St. Elmo

If you live in Colorado you may have heard of St. Elmo. It’s likely the best preserved of the state’s ghost towns, and is 10,000 feet up in the peaks near Buena Vista. There are currently more than 40 structures still there, including a couple of buildings that have been restored already. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast who likes history, this is an excellent place to spend some time – and you won’t need a four-wheel-drive vehicle, either.

Ready to buy a home in Colorado? It’s a beautiful place to live, work, and play. There’s so much to discover that living there is one of the best ways to be close to all the fun and interesting things you’ll want to do. With 1,500 ghost towns to explore, you’ll have your free time planned for quite a while.
