With the increasing snowfall this winter, you may be looking for another outdoor activity in Colorado like fat biking to supplement your skiing and sledding adventures. If you don’t already have a fat bike for snowy trails, don’t worry, there are plenty of places to rent one and try before you invest in one for yourself.
The Western Slope and most of Colorado offer numerous places to try different trails ranging from beginner to competition level in Crested Butte. If you’ve never ventured into this type of activity, taking a guided outing might be a great ice breaker that will give you some safety tips that will make your future trips more enjoyable. Pre-pandemic, Telluride, Salida, Boulder, Fort Collins, Breckenridge, and other locations offered guided tours, but some have discontinued them, so make sure to call for availability.
One popular location to ride trails is the Sunlight Mountain Resort in Glenwood Springs. Around 2 hours from Montrose, this area of the Rocky Mountains provides pristine mountain views and miles of trails to explore. Child care services and lockers are available, and this location does offer military and student discounts.
Purgatory, otherwise known as the Durango Mountain Resort offers day trail passes for fat bike riders, and their website offers some detailed guidelines that might help a novice prepare for a day on the trails.
The Breckenridge Gold Run Nordic Center is still offering fat bike tours Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays through March 31 for 2 hours at $75 for beginners over the age of 8. They do require reservations for guided tours and half-day bike reservations, so be sure to call ahead.
You will want to wait for groomed trails as power days are not optimal for fat bike riding, but with thousands of miles of trails in Colorado, you’ll have plenty to choose from. With the rising popularity of fat biking, this new avenue of exploration can take you on all lengths of trails and even moonlit rides. And if you are feeling especially daring, ski biking with skis on the bike instead of tires is another creative option.
